Sail Canada has delivered two pilot training modules of the Coaching Athletes with a Disability Module over the past weeks. The module provides participants with the opportunity to learn about the nature of disabilities and their potential sailing-specific impact, basics of accessibility and inclusion, and ways to adapt equipment and teaching techniques to accommodate a variety of sailor needs.

The majority of the module is ‘hands on’, allowing coaches learn how to rig specialized assistive equipment, transfer sailors into boats, and spend time sailing in Martin 16s both as helms and as companions. An important component of the module is for participants to learn directly from sailors with disabilities, who offer their expertise, experience and help inspire the participants.

The module has been delivered by the Nova Scotia Yachting Association, at the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron (Halifax) and Ontario Sailing at Nepean Sailing Club (Ottawa).

The module has been created and delivered by Jenny Davey of Montreal for Sail Canada in association with the Coaching Association of Canada NCCP program and the Canadian Paralympic Committee.
